ALBION signed Rochdale's highly-rated defender Craig Dawson for an undisclosed fee on transfer deadline day August 2010.
He penned a three-year deal, plus a year's option in the club's favour, and immediately rejoined Dale on loan for the remainder of the season, scoring an astonishing 11 goals in 48 appearances and helping the newly-promoted League One outfit finish ninth.
He made his competitive Baggies debut in a 4-1 Carling Cup win at Bournemouth in August 2011 and the following day was called-up into the England Under-21s squad by Stuart Pearce, who watched him from the stands at the Seward Stadium.
The 2009/10 season was Dawson's first full campaign as a pro and it proved a memorable one, helping hometown club Rochdale clinch automatic promotion.
The 6ft2in defender also broke the scoring record for a Dale centre-half by bagging a remarkable 11 goals in all competitions.
Dawson's eye-catching displays attracted considerable interest from several Premier League and Championship clubs.
In March 2010, he was voted the FourFourTwo League Two Player of the Year at the annual Football League Awards.
Dale plucked Dawson from non-league outfit Radcliffe Borough in February 2009 - but he stayed at the Unibond League side on loan for the rest of the campaign and was voted their Player of the Season.
Prior to his move to Spotland, he was also an accomplished player for Rochdale Cricket Club during the summer months.
