THE Taunton-born centre-half has been at the club for more than seven years and is part of the club's newly-formed 'development squad'.
He signed a pro contract until June 2012, plus a year's option in the club's favour, in the summer.
A regular in the reserves, he spent time on loan at Rotherham and Shrewsbury last term.
His older brother Leigh was also here as a scholar.
Downing, who can also play a holding midfield role is very intelligent and uses the ball well.
He possessess great awareness, senses danger and sees things early.
He ended the 2008/09 season on a high when he made the bench for Albion's Barclays Premier League goalless draw at Blackburn.
