PEDRO Pele became Albion's ninth summer signing of 2007 after joining from Southampton in August in a £1million deal that saw him pen a two-year contract plus a year's option in the club's favour.
The Portuguese ace found it difficult to hold down a regular place in the Baggies side during his first season but turned in some impressive displays at centre-midfield and centre-half when called upon.
Pele arrived in English football when he joined Saints from Portuguese side Belenenses in July 2006.
He made his league debut in the season-opener at Derby and his strong-yet-cultured displays soon won over the St Mary's faithful.
During his impressive first year at Championship level, Pele became renowned for passing the ball intelligently out of defence and possessing the strength and determination required for the English game.
His form during 2006/07 also saw him called up by the Cape Verde Isles.
In total, Pele made 44 appearances for Southampton, including three as sub, with his solitary goal coming in a 2-0 home victory over Leicester in December 2006.
