Boss to 'address' keeper situation

Mowbray: "Pascal's a human being and is bound to be affected."
TONY Mowbray has admitted Pascal Zuberbuhler is suffering a crisis of confidence and revealed he will 'address' Albion's goalkeeping situation before Saturday's trip to Derby.

But the Baggies boss has urged fans to get behind the Swiss international, who faces competition from Russell Hoult and Luke Steele for the Hawthorns No.1 shirt.

"The goalkeeping position is one we need to look at and address," said Mowbray.

"I'm not one to criticise supporters because I think the fans have got behind the team brilliantly.

"But, from my perspective, it is a little bit disappointing to hear the fans ironically cheering our keeper's clearances.

"I'm very respectful of people who pay their money and support the football club.

"But, for whatever reason, that habit has developed over the course of this season.

"Hopefully, we're all pushing together. We've all got a common goal. We all want to win games and entertain.

"That's why we've all got to strive to push on together.

"I would suggest it's fair comment to say 'Zubi's' confidence is a little bit down at the moment.

"I'll address that as the week goes on.

"As a manager, you assess your players each day and find out where they are and what they're about.

"Pascal's a human being and is bound to be affected."

The Albion chief believes the former Basle stopper's record speaks for itself after he failed to concede a goal in four games at this summer's World Cup.

And he reckons it is a good test of character for the 6ft6in giant in his first season in English football.

"Zubi's got a fantastic record," Mowbray added.

"He didn't concede a goal in the World Cup and has played at a very high level.

"He's an international goalkeeper and he will come back from any disappointments.

"Any goalkeeper in the world will tell you they have days that don't go for them.

"But the strength of any goalkeeper is how they react to that."

Ronnie Wallwork started for the first time in seven games against the Hoops after Nigel Quashie (ankle) joined Darren Carter (hamstring) on the sidelines.

"Nigel has got an ankle problem that keeps recurring," he said.

"He's had it for a while.

"But injuries and suspensions are part and parcel of football and you have to get on with it.

"Other clubs will get injuries and suspensions."
