SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 1888
The Football League came into existence and Albion were pitted against Stoke City at Stoney Lane on the first day.
Albion won 2-0 with goals from Joe Wilson and George "Spry" Woodhall.
Had goal difference or goal average come into existence at that stage, the Throstles would have topped the first ever Football League table.
As it was, no method for separating clubs on equal points had yet been decided, so Albion were merely joint top.
