GONZALO Jara holds up the signed match shirt from Sunday's game at Liverpool that he is donating to the Chilean miners - moments before it began its long journey to South America earlier today.
With the help of the Americas Directorate at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London, the Chile World Cup star has also sent the following personal message of support to his 33 stricken fellow countrymen, who are trapped 700m underground:
"I am sending you a message of support and solidarity because of the terrible situation you find yourselves in.
"It has come as a great relief to me to learn that you are healthy and in good spirits.
"I wish you all the strength and luck in the world and all of the Chilean people hope to see you soon. VIVA CHILE!"
Liverpool kindly announced Jara's gesture before Sunday's game and revealed they too would be donating a shirt signed by their squad to express their own support for the Chilean workers who have been trapped in the San José mine since August 6.
The news was greeted by warm applause from all four sides of Anfield.
