PAUL Scharner revealed the main reason he joined Albion is to prove himself as a central midfielder in the Barclays Premier League.
The Austria international watched from the Anfield directors' box as his new team-mates suffered an undeserved 1-0 defeat at Liverpool on Sunday
The 30-year-old was impressed by what he saw and is relishing the opportunity to slot into what he considers to be a footballing team.
"I saw the game at Liverpool and they did really well there," said Scharner.
"It was an undeserved defeat.
"There is a lot of potential and I'm sure we can stay in the league.
"The style of play here is beautiful and what I was looking for was to get into a team that plays football.
"That's what I've missed over the last couple of years.
"Now it's up to me because I'm signed as a midfielder and this is my best position.
"I'm looking forward to it.
"I've signed as a central midfielder and that is why I joined West Bromwich because I want to take the chance to show everyone this is the right position for me."
The Austria international joined Wigan from Norwegian side Brann in January 2006 and went onto make a club record 145 Premier League appearances for the Latics, scoring an impressive 14 goals.
And he admits his target now is to repeat his DW Stadium achievement and establish the Baggies as a top-flight force.
"It's an absolute pleasure to sign for West Brom," he added.
"I remember West Brom is called a yo-yo team - up and down between the Premier League and the Championship.
"My first target is to help establish West Brom in the Premier League and stay there for a long time.
"The main target for Wigan was to stay in the Premier League and establish ourselves in the Premier League.
"We did a good job in the past but now I have a new target at a new club."
Scharner hasn't played a game since Wigan's final match of last season at Chelsea but has arrived at The Hawthorns in peak physical condition, having worked with a personal fitness coach for the past two months.
And he is excited to be back at the heart of a club, whose fans have already impressed him.
"I haven't been with a club for a few months," he said.
"I played my last game on May 9 for Wigan.
"I'm looking forward to getting settled with the team and enjoy some team atmosphere.
"I'm really looking forward to training.
"It is a beautiful stadium and the fans are very decent.
"The away section at Anfield was packed full of Baggies.
"I'm looking forward to my first home game against Tottenham.
"Hopefully the stadium is sold out."
