VVV Venlo 1 Albion 2

Posted on: Mon 19 Jul 2010

GOALS in each half from Ishmael Miller and Gabriel Tamas ensured dominant Albion wrapped up their week-long training camp in Holland with a deserved victory.

Miller made it two goals in as many pre-season games by breaking the deadlock in the 25th minute.

Sloppy defending allowed VVV striker Ruud Boymans to level on 59 - but the Baggies were back in front less than two minutes later thanks to Gabriel Tamas' well-taken goal (pictured right).

Albion's performance warranted a bigger winning margin against the Eredivisie outfit, with Graham Dorrans and Chris Brunt both hitting the woodwork and Jerome Thomas and Roman Bednar going close.

And their cause was helped 12 minutes from time when Venlo sub Ferry de Regt was red-carded for a professional foul on Thomas.

Young guns Marcus Haber and Sam Mantom both started as, for the second weekend running, Roberto Di Matteo fielded completely different XIs in each half.

Backed by a huge - and vocal - following of at least 400 fans at the neutral venue of VV Reuver, Albion recorded the first shot of the game inside three minutes.

Miller raced onto Jonas Olsson's pinpoint ball over the top before firing at keeper Dennis Gentenaar from an acute angle.

Then, on 11, Gentenaar had to take evasive action by racing out of his area to clear in the nick of time before Miller could get on the end of Mantom's throughball.

There were regular periods of inactivity during the first 45 - but one was punctuated when Dorrans found Haber on the left with a sublime raking ball.

The Canadian laid the ball back to Leon Barnett, whose cross was well taken at full stretch by Gentenaar.

With Scott Carson still untroubled, Albion snatched a 25th-minute lead.

Dorrans sent Miller clear with a defence-splitting pass and the 23-year-old striker outmuscled Frank var Kouwen before planting a cool left-footed finish past Gentenaar.

Albion, wearing their new home kit for the first time, were very much in control and only the woodwork prevented them from making it 2-0 on 32.

Mantom halted a Venlo attack by dispossessing Bryan Linssen before sending Miller clear down the left.

The powerhouse striker's cross dropped nicely for Dorrans, whose volley crashed into the ground and off the underside of the bar before bouncing to safety.

The Dutch club finally recorded an effort at goal three minutes later when Linssen saw a 15-yard snapshot fly just wide of Carson's right-hand post.

Three minutes before the break, Carson was able to watch Rick Verbeek's wild drive fly wide from Achmed Ahahaoui's centre.

Di Matteo made 11 changes at the break and thus granted Pablo Ibanez his second run out in central defence, this time alongside Tamas.

Albion were a little slower out of the blocks after the break and Daniels did well to keep out Linssen's low 18-yard shot after Ahahaoui's corner had been headed into his path in the 54th minute.

Then, out of the blue, Venlo equalised.

Albion lost possession on the edge of their own box just before the hour mark and Ahahaoui's deflected cross fell perfectly for Boymans, who fired home from close range.

But Venlo were only level for just over a minute.

Ishmael Miller

The composed Tamas dispossessed Michael Uchebo just inside his own half before surging forward and unlocking VVV's defence with a clever one-two with James Morrison and slipping the ball past the helpless Gentenaar.

Albion should have been further ahead on 64 when Steven Reid found Bednar following a superb right-wing run and cross, only for the unmarked striker to head wastefully wide form ten yards.

Gentenaar then showed a safe pair of hands to clutch Morrison's 20-yard grass-cutter from a short free-kick.

Daniels wasn't called into action again until the 71st minute when he leapt off his line to clutch sub Diogo Viana's dangerous centre.

Thomas looked a constant threat down the left and he danced through the Venlo defence in the 74th minute before firing wide from an acute angle.

There was a rare occurrence 12 minutes from time - a red card in a friendly.

Venlo sub de Regt could have little complaints after denying Thomas a clear goalscoring opportunity by scything the winger down just outside the penalty area as he raced onto Brunt'slofted ball.

Brunt almost increased the punishment when his curled effort from the ensuing free-kick crashed against the foot of the left-hand post.

Venlo's final effort of the game came four minutes from time when sub Josue Pesqueira dragged an 18-yard shot wide of the near post from a short corner.

Back came Albion and Bednar, for once onside, latched onto Steven Reid's ball before firing tamely at Gentenaar.

Thomas was unlucky to see his goalbound shot deflected wide after good work by Reuben Reid down the right.

In the first minute of stoppage time, another Reid centre was seized on by Bednar, who turned and shot in one movement, only to see his effort deflected inches over the bar.
