Cech's World Cup adventure continues

Posted on: Thu 24 Jun 2010

MAREK Cech's World Cup adventure continued today as he marched into the last 16 with Slovakia thanks to a dramatic 3-2 win over Italy in Johannesburg.

The Baggies left-back, who played all of his country's opening 1-1 draw with New Zealand, was an unused substitute as the holders were dumped out of the tournament.

Chris Wood's South Africa 2010 journey is over as the All Whites' goalless stalemate with Group F winners Paraguay saw them finish third.

The 18-year-old Albion striker came on for Plymouth's Rory Fallon in the 69th minute at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

In only their second ever appearance at the Finals the Kiwis ended the tournament unbeaten courtesy of three draws - a point ahead of the bottom-placed Azurri.

Slovakia will now play the winners of Group E - Netherlands, Japan or Denmark - in the second round at their first ever World Cup.
