First league meetings
Albion's first game against Preston North End came in the founding year of the Football League, with both teams playing in Old Division One. The Baggies travelled to Deepdale on October 13, 1888, but suffered a 3-0 defeat - only their second loss of the campaign. The second meeting came when North End visited Stoney Lane on Boxing Day of the same year when 5,150 fans saw Albion suffer a 5-0 beating. Albion were the first team during the 1888/89 season to top the league table after a 2-0 win over Stoke on the opening day. However, Preston won the league that season. Albion also lost 1-0 to PNE in the FA Cup semi-finals in the same season.

The first was at home on Boxing Day in the founding year of the Football League. The next happened on October 5, 1889, at Deepdale. The final 5-0 thrashing came on Lilywhites soil on February 26, 1895.
