First league meetings

Albion's first game against Preston North End came in the founding year of the Football League, with both teams playing in Old Division One. The Baggies travelled to Deepdale on October 13, 1888, but suffered a 3-0 defeat - only their second loss of the campaign. The second meeting came when North End visited Stoney Lane on Boxing Day of the same year when 5,150 fans saw Albion suffer a 5-0 beating. Albion were the first team during the 1888/89 season to top the league table after a 2-0 win over Stoke on the opening day. However, Preston won the league that season. Albion also lost 1-0 to PNE in the FA Cup semi-finals in the same season.

Big wins and defeats

Albion's biggest win over Preston was 4-0 when they saw in the New Year in style on January 2, 1960. An own goal from Preston began proceedings, with strikes from Derek Kevan, Ronnie Allen and Alec Jackson sealing the victory. North End have beaten the Baggies 5-0 three times. The first was at home on Boxing Day in the founding year of the Football League. The next happened on October 5, 1889, at Deepdale. The final 5-0 thrashing came on Lilywhites soil on February 26, 1895.

Interesting Facts

Since losing 2-0 at home to Preston in Old Division Two in September 1973 Albion have won all seven Hawthorns encounters between the two sides in the league.

North End contain two Baggies old boys in their ranks in Richard Chaplow and Darren Carter.
