First league meetings

Albion first played Swansea Town, as they were called before Swansea gained City status in 1971, on October 22, 1927, at The Hawthorns in old Division Two. The Baggies won 5-2 thanks to a Joe Carter double and goals from Arthur Fitton, Jimmy Cookson and Charlie Wilson. Albion first made the trip to the Vetch Field on March 3, 1928, losing 3-2, with Cookson scoring both consolation goals. Cookson and Carter were the two top goalscorers for the Baggies that term, with 39 and 15 goals respectively. Swansea finished the season sixth, just above eighth-placed Albion, with only two points separating the teams.

Big wins and defeat

Albion's biggest wins over Swansea were 5-1 on September 22, 1928, with Carter and George James bagging a brace apiece and Sammy Short scoring, and 6-2 the following season on October 26 as Tommy Glidden smashed four, Carter notched and Frank Cresswell netted. The biggest defeat against the Swans also came in 1929 when Albion lost 6-1 at the Vetch Field. Carter scored the Baggies' goal.

Interesting fact

Tonight's game will be the Baggies' first competitive match at the Liberty Stadium. Then-Coca-Cola Championship champions Albion did play then-League One champions Swansea in a goalless pre-season friendly draw at the stadium on August 2, 2008.
