On This Day - March 16

Posted on: Tue 16 Mar 2010

SATURDAY, MARCH 16, 2002

"The Battle of Bramall Lane" took place at Sheffield United as promotion chasing Albion carved the home side apart.

A ragged United outfit had three men sent off, two of them, Santos and Suffo, dismissed within minutes of coming on as substitutes.

After using all of their subs, two United men then mysteriously left the field injured, reducing the team to only six players, the referee Eddie Wolstenholme having no choice but to abandon the game with eight minutes left and Albion 3-0 up, Scott Dobie scoring two and Derek McInnes adding the goal of the season, a ferocious first time drive from the edge of the box that flew in.

Manager Gary Megson insisted afterwards Albion would not return to play again if the fixture had to be replayed but the authorities ultimately allowed the 3-0 scoreline to stand.
