First league meetings
Albion first played Blackpool on October 26, 1901, in Old Division Two. The game at Bloomfield Road ended in a 2-2 draw with Dan Nurse and Charlie 'Chippy' Simmons scoring for the visitors. When the Seasiders paid a visit to The Hawthorns later that season, on February 22, they were thrashed 7-2. Jackie Kifford and Jim Stevenson bagged a goal apiece, Tommy Worton scored a brace and 'Chippy' Simmons notched a hat-trick. That season Albion regained their Division One status at the first attempt finishing top with 55 points, while Blackpool finished 13th on 29 points. Worton, Stevenson and Nurse were the only members of the 23-man squad to appear in all 34 league games and the one FA Cup match during 1901/02 campaign.
Big wins and defeats
Albion's biggest win over Blackpool was a 7-1 drubbing on April 28, 1962, which came in the final game of the season. Derek Kevan scored four times, with Graham Lovett, the late Sir Bobby Robson and Don Howe (pen) also scoring. Howe was voted Midlands Footballer of the Year. The Baggies have also twice beaten the Seasiders by five goals. The first was the previously mentioned 7-2 win at the first league meeting at The Hawthorns. The second was a 5-0 win on March 10, 1906, in Old Division Two. Both 'Chippy' Simmons and Archie Haywood scored a double and Eli Bradley notched. This was 'Chippy' Simmons' first season back with Albion, re-signing from West Ham within a year of leaving. It was in this season Albion produced their first matchday programme called 'The Albion News', with 5,000 copies being printed for the first league game of the season against Burnley. The Baggies' heaviest defeat by Blackpool came on their travels in Old Division One, on March 3, 1956, when they lost 5-1.
Interesting Fact
Blackpool have not won at The Hawthorns since a 3-1 victory in Old Division One 46 years ago.
