EDDIE Newton insisted Chris Brunt's deadly double against Derby was the 'cherry on the cake' he deserved.
The Northern Ireland midfielder broke a seven-game goal drought in style with a second-half brace which overturned the Rams' 49th-minute opener.
And Newton was delighted for Brunt, who he believes has been an unsung hero for the second-placed Baggies this term.
"For my mind, Brunty's performances have deserved goals before and he's been a key element to our success this season," said Roberto Di Matteo's No.2.
"His transition play in going from defence to attack has been fantastic and I don't think it's been appreciated at times.
"Today he got the cherry on top of the cake with his two goals - and they were well deserved."
Newton was also buoyed by the performance of new loan signing Ben Watson on his debut as he got 81 minutes under his belt after only playing 33 minutes since the turn of the year for Wigan.
And Albion's assistant head coach has been pleased by the way the London-born midfielder has settled in at The Hawthorns.
"We know Ben's qualities," he added.
"We've seen him play that way for QPR this season and we know he understands the Championship and the demands of it.
"He came in and he saw how we play the other night.
"He's had a few meetings and training sessions and he's mixed into the dressing room very quickly.
"He's got that character and he's a confident lad.
"All we told him today was get on the ball as much as possible and keep switching the play.
"When he had to make tackles he's aggressive as well.
"That's what we like about him."
