Di Matteo's selection problems mount

Posted on: Mon 15 Feb 2010

ROBERTO Di Matteo's selection headache mounted in today's bruising FA Cup fifth-round draw at Reading.

The Baggies boss named Andy Slory in his starting XI but lost the Dutch winger to an Achilles injury in the warm-up.

That paved the way for Robert Koren to be elevated from substitute and Academy midfielder Kayleden Brown had to be drafted onto the bench at the last minute.

Gonzalo Jara, who needed five stitches to a foot injury, and Abdoulaye Meite (ankle) were both forced off during the Madejski Stadium encounter.

And Albion are now sweating on the trio's fitness ahead of Tuesday's Coca-Cola Championship trip to promotion-rivals Cardiff (ko 7.45pm).

Youssouf Mulumbu will also miss the Bluebirds clash after being sent-off for two bookable offences against the Royals.

Marek Cech (hamstring), Ishmael Miller (ankle), James Morrison (heel) and Jerome Thomas (suspended) have already been ruled out of the City trip.

"The number of games we're playing is very demanding and I'm a bit sad because we've lost Jara to injury, Meite had to be taken off and Mulumbu is now suspended," said Di Matteo.

"I already had a big injury list back home, so that's a bit of a downside.

"I'll have to assess the situation and then we'll see what we have to do.

"Before today's game, I already had five players out.

"Jara needed five stitches and we'll have to wait and see on Meite's injury - but hopefully it's not too bad."
