'One Shot' Carson aiming for 'double tops'

Posted on: Sat 13 Feb 2010

SCOTT Carson is aiming to finish the season with a league and cup 'double tops' - after the dart board he introduced to the Baggies camp proved a big hit for team spirit.

The arrows have been flying in hotels up and down the country on Albion's recent away trips.

And the Hawthorns skipper believes it has brought togetherness to the squad that has helped them secure back-to-back wins at Blackpool and Plymouth last week.

The board will be out again later today as Roberto Di Matteo's Coca-Cola Championship leaders gear up for tomorrow's FA Cup fifth-round clash at Reading (ko 3pm).

""I'll have to take the credit for getting the board," said Carson, who now possesses his own personalised Scott 'One Shot' Carson darts.

"When the World Championships darts were on TV around Christmas the lads were getting right into it.

"As a group of lads we have always said for a bit of team bonding we would like to see a bit of Premier League darts live.

"But, with it being on a Thursday, it's a bit difficult.

"I did a bit of searching on the internet for travel boards because sometimes when we get to the hotel for away games we just sit in our rooms from three o'clock onwards.

"They can be long days.

"We took it to Blackpool and Plymouth and it gives the lads something else to do instead of just being sat in their rooms.

"It just seemed to get everyone together a bit more.

"I'm sure there will be another round before Reading.

"Every time we go on the bus we fling it on and it just gives the lads something to do.

"Even if we get half an hour or an hour it helps.

"If you've been on a bus for three hours the last thing you want to do is lie on your bed for another three hours.

"Normally we get on the bus for three hours, get there for 4pm or 5pm and, until we have our dinner at 7.30, we're sitting doing nothing.

"So it's good to do something, just for half an hour, and we have a coffee and a laugh.

"It saves being bored, twiddling your thumbs in your room.

The England goalkeeper quipped: "I can't take the credit for the away form all season!

"I'll take it for the last two away games and the togetherness we had there.

"The darts will probably get forgotten in a couple of weeks but it is good fun at the moment."

Carson is expecting the Royals to provide stiff opposition as they battle it out for a place in the quarter-finals.

Brian McDermott's men have already beaten Barclays Premier League sides Liverpool and Burnley in this year's competition.

But the 24-year-old stopper senses a renewed determination among his team-mates, who are enjoying a seven-game unbeaten run following harsh words in the wake of last month's 3-1 home defeat by promotion rivals Nottingham Forest.

"We have to respect Reading totally," he added.

"Some teams are totally different in the FA Cup and maybe they play with less pressure on their back.

"They seem to express themselves in a different way and play better football.

"They went to Anfield and got a result and they beat Burnley so we know it's going to be a difficult game.

"But I don't think we can worry too much about the opposition.

"If we play the way we have been doing and the way we can do then everyone is full of confidence we can get a win.

"After the Forest game there were a few things said in the dressing room and it was a little bit heated.

"But I think it has opened our eyes.

"Maybe before that game we just thought we could cruise our way to automatic promotion.

"But since then we can't fault anybody from the coaching staff, to the players, everybody has put an extra shift in and worked twice as hard and I think that has been the main reason for our good form at the moment.

"We have worked hard and on Saturday against Plymouth in the second half we were a little bit tired but the players stuck together and kept each other on their toes.

"Maybe at the start of the season we would have lost or drawn a couple of the recent games but there is a great desire in the players to get automatic promotion.

It's just about desire and commitment.

"When we have done that this season we have been unstoppable really, and in the last four games we have worked unbelievably hard when it's been very difficult.

"Nobody ever questions that we can play football and says we're a bad footballing side.

"But if we don't put the effort in and defend well we will lose and I think that's been the main difference in the last couple of games."

Dean Kiely

There is no doubt Carson is just as enthusiastic about his darts, with his main rival on the oche being the same man competing with him for his place between the sticks - Dean Kiely.

He joked: "I think it's between me and Deano as to who is the best.

"We did set off to keep a score of our matches but I think it was 6-6 the last time we recorded it, so it's that tight.

"I think Deano might get a shirt made!

"His wife prints shirts so I think he might, but I'm still waiting to see it.

"I think Jonas is the player you avoid - he's a bit of a bad loser.

"Dozza beat Jonas and Jonas threw one.

"If Dozza had missed the last couple of games it would have been because he had a dart in the back of his head!"

And the current darts craze even transcends the derby divide with Carson recently playing former Leeds team-mate and Villa midfielder James Milner.

"I went to his house," he added.

"We were good mates at Leeds and he only lives around the corner from me so we had a little game the other day.

"He is a bit tasty.

"He said he needs to go for an eye test and he hadn't played for a little bit so I was quite hopeful.

"But he beat me 3-2.

"I did get a 180 against him, though, so at least that's something."
