Wood double earns point
ALBION Under-18s suffered last-gasp heartbreak as Manchester City pinched a point in Saturday's 2-2 draw.
City took an early lead but Chris Wood levelled in the 13th minute to make the scores level at the break and the New Zealand striker put the Baggies ahead four minutes into the second half.
But the visitors equalised three minutes from time to deny Keith Downing's side all three points in the FA Premier Academy League (Group C) clash.
"It was a tough game," said the Hawthorns Academy coach.
"Manchester City are a good side and came with a very strong team.
"They started brightly and scored early with a good goal from their point of view but poor defensively from us.
"We responded pretty well after the set-back so early and Tom Waghorn put a great cross in from the left-hand side for Chris Wood to score with his head.
"It was a very frenetic, end-to-end game in the first half.
"It was an open, fast game where both teams could hurt you going forward.
"Chris Wood ran through and curled home a superb goal to restore our lead but then the game settled down into a pattern where they had possession deep in their third.
"We were content for that to happen and were nice and comfortable behind the ball.
"But it was a disappointing finish from us where we didn't see out the last three minutes, got caught centrally in front of our box and they punished us.
"It's about game management.
"If it means win ugly in the last three minutes we need to learn how to do that.
"We repeated the performance against Villa and didn't get the result again.
"But I was pleased with the overall performance and pleased for Chris Wood to get two goals, which will improve his confidence no end.
"There were strong performances all round."
