 FA Cup meetings

The first time Albion met Newcastle in the FA Cup tie was a third-round tie at The Hawthorns on January 8, 1938. The Baggies won 1-0 thanks to WG Richardson's strike. Richardson finished as top goal scorer for the eighth successive season, a club record that still stands today.

Albion renewed FA Cup rivalries in the fifth round on February 8, 1954, when they won a home tie 3-2 thanks to a Ronnie Allen hat-trick.

The final time the two teams faced each other in the FA Cup was a fifth-round meeting at The Hawthorns on February 16, 1974. The Magpies beat The Baggies 3-0 en route to the final, which they lost 3-0 to Liverpool.

Interesting Fact

After the Baggies beat Toon in the FA Cup in 1954 they went on to win the trophy, beating Preston North End 3-2 at Wembley in front of a 99,852 crowd (the biggest Albion have ever played in front of). Ronnie Allen bagged a brace and Frank Griffin notched.
