First league meetings

Albion first played Newcastle United on December 3, 1898, suffering a 3-0 defeat at St James' Park. When the Magpies travelled to Stoney Lane on April Fools' Day the same season the Baggies won 2-0, with Arthur Smith and Billy Bassett scoring. Smith was at Albion for three years (1898-1901) but only played six league games and this was his only goal. Bassett retired at the end of this season after 311 appearances and 77 goals in all competitions. He later went on to become shareholder, director and then chairman, serving the club for more than 50 years. Newcastle and Albion finished on the same points this season (30), with Newcastle just finishing above Albion in 13th place due to a superior goal difference.

Big wins and defeats

Albion's biggest win over Newcastle United 6-0 at home on September 5, 1960. Alec Jackson scored a hat-trick, and Sir Bobby Robson, Derek Kevan and Davey Burnside also netted.

Albion have also twice beaten Newcastle 6-1, both at home. The first came early in Football League history on September 27, 1902. Billy Lee, Charlie Simmons, Jim Stevenson and Jimmy Mclean all notched to add to Fred Buck's double. The second came on May 13, 1967, in the last game of the season. Ken Foggo, Graham Williams and Clive Clark all scored and Tony 'Bomber' Brown hit a hat-trick.

Newcastle have beaten Albion 5-1 four times since they first met, three at St James' Park and once at The Hawthorns, and all happened in the first half of the season.

The first occurred on November 21, 1931, with Tommy Glidden scoring the Baggies' lone goal. The next happened seven years later on September 14, 1938, with Harry Jones scoring for the Albion. Newcastle had played at The Hawthorns just seven days earlier, with Albion winning 5-2.

Albion were beaten 5-1 on November 26, 1949, with Dave Walsh bagging the consolation.

The final time was at The Hawthorns on November 1, 1989, when Don Goodman scored the Baggies goal. Goodman was the first Albion player to hit 20 league goals in a season since 1970/71.

Interesting fact

When the two clubs meet tomorrow it will pit the best home record in the Coca-Cola Championship against the best away record in the division. Only six points separate the teams.
