ROBERTO Di Matteo admits he may send new signing Marcus Haber out on loan but not before he has had a chance to settle at Albion and show what he can do.
The Canadian striker penned an 18-month deal, plus a further year's option in the club's favour, last week.
But the Baggies boss views the 21-year-old hitman as one for future and feels gaining valuable playing time on loan at another club may be more beneficial than time spent in the reserves.
"He's a young player and we will monitor his progression and see where he can go," said Di Matteo.
"He was put to us by an agent and then we looked at him, and then he came over on trial.
"He's only just arrived so let's have a look at him.
"But playing is always better for the development of the player."
The Hawthorns chief says Haber has all the attributes to make it in the English game and has not ruled him out of seeing some first-team action for Albion this term.
But he believes the thick of a Coca-Cola Championship promotion push is not the best time to blood such an inexperienced player.
"He scores goals and scored quite a few in Canada.
"He's got a physical presence at 6ft3in.
"He's technically a good player and is quite quick.
"I think he's got all the attributes for the English game.
"It's difficult to say if he'll have any first-team involvement this season.
"At this moment we have other players who are proven and I don't think we have too much room to experiment."
