First league meetings
Albion first played Cardiff City at The Hawthorns on October 22, 1921, with the game finishing in a 2-2draw. Howard Gregory and Andy Smith scored. The Baggies travelled to Ninian Park for the first time just seven days later with the Bluebirds winning 2-0. This was City's first season in Old Division One and they finished fourth on 48 points, eight ahead of the 13th-placed Baggies.
Big wins and defeats
Albion's biggest win over the Bluebirds was 6-1 at home on November 21, 1953, in Old Division One. Ronnie Allen bagged four and Johnny Nicholls scored a brace. The Baggies finished second in league this season and also won the FA Cup against Preston North End in front of a 99,852 crowd at Wembley Stadium. The Baggies also beat City 5-0 at Ninian Park on April 24, 1948, in Old Division One. Arthur Taylor scored a double and Jack Haines also notched twice, including a penalty. Arthur Rowley netted the final goal. This season saw the end of an era when Fred Everiss handed over his managerial duties to Jack Smith, after he had been in charge since 1902. Everiss went on to become a director and was associated with the Albion for a total of 55 years (1896-1951).
The biggest defeats Albion have suffered at the hands of Cardiff were both 3-0. The first was on Boxing Day 1922. This season the first full international was staged at The Hawthorns when England beat Ireland 2-0 in October in front of a 20,173 crowd. The second came the following season on November 3, again at Ninian Park.
Interesting fact
Cardiff midfielder Riccardo Scimeca spent over one-and-a-half years at The Hawthorns and was part of the Albion squad that pulled off the 2004/05 Premier League 'Great Escape'.
