Albion hit by injuries and illness

Posted on: Fri 27 Nov 2009

ALBION have been hit by a series of fresh injuries and illness ahead of Saturday's trip to Sheffield Wednesday (ko 3pm).

Jerome Thomas (back strain) and Filipe Teixeira (thigh) both missed training today and are doubts for the Hillsborough encounter.

Robert Koren was also absent and is due to see a specialist this afternoon to fully assess a hernia problem, leaving Roberto Di Matteo sweating on his midfield options.

"Jerome Thomas has a little strain in his back," said the Baggies boss.

"Roko has a hernia problem.

"He is seeing a consultant surgeon today.

"He is seeing him just to get a correct assessment of his injury and to see what the procedure is from there.

"He has had it for a little bit but he felt something and then it went away.

"Now it has recurred and the pain is a bit stronger so that's why we have sent him to a consultant.

"Teixeira has a thigh problem.

"None of them trained today so we'll have to see tomorrow who can get a session in.

"We're struggling a little bit today but we still have a few hours before Saturday's game."

Joe Mattock is a major doubt for the Owls clash as he continues to suffer with the badly bruised foot he sustained in the Baggies' 4-1 win over Bristol City five days ago.

And Shelton Martis was pulled out of last night's reserves match with Walsall after falling ill.

The Baggies defender is suffering with flu like Roman Bednar, who missed the last game and was forced to finish training early today.

"Shelton fell ill yesterday and we sent him home," DI Matteo revealed.

"Roman has been ill for five days.

"He came in this morning and did a bit of training but still doesn't feel 100 per cent.

"I think it's just seasonal flu.

"It's not swine flu though!

"Joe Mattock will be a major doubt for Saturday.

"We still have 48 hours but he is in pain so it doesn't look too good."

He added: "I think in the last three or four weeks we have been quite lucky because we haven't had any injuries.

"That was brilliant and it showed in the results that we had being able to train with all the players and have all of them fit.

"But that's how football is.

"One week you are okay and the next week you have four players missing.

"We just have to work around it.
