Burton Albion Res 0 Albion Res 10 (TEN)

Posted on: Tue 03 Nov 2009

ALBION reserves hit a perfect ten as they thrashed previously-unbeaten Burton Albion 10-0 in the totesport.com Central League Central Division.

Roman Bednar was one of seven different goalscorers as he got 90 minutes under his belt on his comeback from the back injury he suffered just over a fortnight ago.

Reuben Reid (13, 60) and Shelton Martis (40, 57) both scored either side of the break to record doubles and give the Baggies a four-goal lead.

Chris Wood (61, 90+1) also bagged a brace and his two goals sandwiched strikes from Paul Downing (64), Bednar (70), substitute Lateef Elford-Alliyu (79) and Leon Barnett (89).

First-team coach Michael Appleton was full of praise for his charges.

"The lads put in a fantastic performance as the scoreline suggests," he said.

"Even when we were 9-0 up we were still harrying and pressing from front to back.

"It was a fantastic team display and the work-rate was just as good.

"I've been on the end of a few hidings myself and it's not a nice feeling.

"But the lads were still very respectful and it was a really professional performance."

Bednar, who was an unused substitute in Saturday's 5-0 Coca-Cola Championship thrashing of Watford, looked lively and surpassed expectations by lasting the distance as he pressed his claims for a return to first-team action against Leicester in five days' time (ko 3pm).

"Roman put a real shift in and had four or five attempts, of which three were on target," Appleton added.

"I was going to take him off after 65 minutes but he was desperate to get a goal and he looked fit so I kept him on.

"I think he enjoyed being on the pitch."
