First league meetings
Albion first played Barnsley at The Hawthorns on December 21, 1901 in the old Division Two, winning 3-1 thanks to a Charlie 'Chippy' Simmons goal and a Tommy Worton double. Simmons and Worton were the club's highest scorers that season, netting 24 and 19 goals respectively.
The Baggies next faced the Tykes in the last game of the term, travelling to Oakwell on April 4, 1902 and winning 2-0. Jim Stevenson and William Poynton were on target. Poynton was at Albion from 1902-1907 but only made two appearances, both in the 1901/02 season, and scored on both occasions.
Big wins and defeats
Albion's biggest wins over Barnsley were both 7-0 thrashings at The Hawthorns. The first was on November 11, 1989 thanks to goals from Tony Ford and Bernard McNally (pen), a Kevin Bartlett double and a Don Goodman hat-trick. Goodman's treble helped him become the first Albion player since 1970/71 to score over 20 league goals in a season.
The second 7-0 win arrived on May 6, 2007, when a Kevin Phillips hat-trick, Nathan Ellington double (one pen) and goals from Robert Koren and Zoltan Gera booked Albion's place in their ill-fated play-offs campaign.
Another big win over Barnsley also came on home turf on December 26, 1930. Albion won 5-0 with WG Richardson, Stan Wood, George Shaw (pen) and Tommy Glidden (2) all getting on the scoresheet. It was this season Albion completed a unique double, winning the FA Cup and promotion to the old First Division, a feat which had never been accomplished before, nor has it since.
Albion's biggest defeat against Barnsley came at Oakwell on August 26, 2000. The Baggies lost 4-1, with Lee Hughes - top scorer that season with 22 goals - bagging a consolation. Albion went on to reach the Championship play-offs but failed to make it past the semi-finals.
Interesting Fact
Barnsley centre-half Darren Moore helped Albion win promotion to the Premier League twice during his five years at the club. The first success was in 2001/02 - Moore's first season at the club after arriving from Portsmouth - and the second came in 2003/04. Albion finished second both times.
Luke Steele helped Barnsley reach the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley when he was on loan from Albion in 2008.
