First league meetings
Albion first played Arsenal, then known as Woolwich Arsenal, in Old Division Two on March 13, 1902, at The Manor Ground in Plumstead, which was their home until the 1913 move to Highbury. The Baggies suffered a 2-1 defeat on this trip. Just two weeks later on April 12, 1902, the Gunners travelled to The Hawthorns where Albion won 2-1. It was this victory over Arsenal that clinched Albion's promotion to Old Division One.
Big wins and defeats
Albion's biggest win over the Gunners was a 7-0 thrashing on October 14, 1922, in Old Division One. Fred Morris bagged four goals to add to a Jack Crisp double and Howard Gregory strike. The Baggies netted five times in 13 second-half minutes. Albion have suffered two big defeats at the hands of Arsenal, both at Highbury. The first was a 6-3 loss on November 10, 1951, and the second - and largest - was a 6-2 thumping on September 19, 1970. Tony 'Bomber' Brown scored in the latter match, along with Hugh Reed. 'Bomber' was Albion's 30-goalscorer that season. It was the same campaign in which he won his only England cap - playing in a goalless draw with Wales, at Wembley.
