First league meetings
Albion first played Middlesbrough in a 2-1 win on their travels on October 12, 1901. When the Teessiders visited The Hawthorns two months later on December 14, 1901 they suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Baggies. Billy Lee and Charlie 'Chippy' Simmons scored one apiece for Albion in both games. It was this season that saw 'Chippy' become the first Albion player to bag 20 goals in a league season. He finished the season as Albion's highest goalscorer, netting 24 goals.
Big wins and defeats
Albion's biggest wins over Boro both came on home soil. The first was a 6-3 thriller on January 5, 1935, with five Baggies players making it onto the score sheet - Teddy Sandford fired a double and WG Richardson, Wally Boyes, Arthur Gale, Joe Carter all notched. The following season they won 5-2 on December 26, 1935, with George Shaw scoring and WG Richardson blasting four. It was in the 1935/36 season that WG scored a record 40 goals. Two 4-0 scorelines account for the Baggies' biggest defeats against the Teessiders. The first was on March 16, 1974, at The Hawthorns in the Old Division Two. Middlesbrough won the league that season. The second 4-0 reverse happened more recently on April 4, 2005. This, however, was the season of the 'Great Escape' when Albion became the first club to be bottom of the Premier League at Christmas and still avoid relegation.
Interesting fact
In the 1997 FA Cup final Middlesbrough lost 2-0 to Chelsea. The Chelsea goalscorers were Roberto Di Matteo and Eddie Newton. Di Matteo scored after 42 seconds, which remained the quickest goal in an FA Cup final until last season when Louis Saha scored in 25 seconds for Everton against Chelsea.

Didier Digard (groin) could be involved. Emanuel Pogatetz (knee) played in the reserves in midweek but is still building his fitness and tomorrow's game will come too soon for him.
