Albion Res 0 Shrews Res 3

Posted on: Mon 07 Sep 2009

ALBION'S totesport.com League (Central Division) campaign got off to the worst possible start as they conceded three times in the opening 32 minutes.

A youthful Baggies side, bereft of any competitive first-team experience, saw a Jake Robinson double and an Andre Grey goal effectively wrap up the points before the break.

Albion saw plenty of the ball throughout but failed to force Shrews keeper Andreas Arestidou into a truly meaningful save.

Robinson notched his first as early as the fourth minute when he raced onto a throughball and shot across Ryan Allsop. The keeper got a hand to it but it wasn't enough to keep the shot out.

Only the woodwork prevented the hosts levelling on 13 when the lively Lateef Elford-Alliyu (pictured) saw a flick header from Josh Knight's right-wing cross bounce back out off the underside of the bar.

Albion continued to enjoy plenty of possession but rarely threatened again before the break.

And a mix-up between Ashley Malcolm and Allsop in the 21st minute gifted Grey the simplest of tasks of slipping the ball into an empty net to double Town's lead.

It got worse in the 32nd minute when Robinson again raced clear - this time onto a flicked-on long punt - and lobbed the stranded Allsop.

England Under-17s starlet George Thorne, who impressed in the middle of the park, recorded Albion's only other real effort of the half, seeing a stinging 30-yard drive pushed away by Arestidou.

The second-half followed a similar pattern.

Although there was no further scoring, with the visitors rarely testing the Baggies rearguard, Albion enjoyed the lion's share of possession but were largely limited to efforts from distance.

Knight threatened first when he cut inside on 52 but miscued well over.

On the hour mark, another England Under-17 international, Saido Berahino, saw a first-time 20-yard drive from Kayleden Brown's square ball fizz just wide of Arestidou's right-hand post.

Albion's slim hopes of getting anything out of the game faded when Elford-Alliyu directed a decent headed chance over from sub Tom Waghorn's centre.
