Albion 0 Chievo 0 - FULL MATCH REPORT

Posted on: Tue 04 Aug 2009

ALBION rounded off their pre-season programme with an encouraging, but goalless, display against Serie A side Chievo.

The Baggies commanded the game - Roberto Di Matteo's first at The Hawthorns - for long spells but could not muster the goal their dominance warranted.

Luke Moore and Chris Brunt came closest to breaking the deadlock - but the Italians held on.

Albion's players paid their respects to former club captain Sir Bobby Robson, who passed away yesterday, by sporting black armbands during the game.

Di Matteo rang six changes for the visit of last season's 16th-placed Serie A side, with Scott Carson, Marek Cech, Jonas Olsson, Brunt, Jonathan Greening and Moore being recalled.

The men to make way were Dean Kiely, Dwayne Samuels, Abdoulaye Meite, Filipe Teixeira, Craig Beattie and Robert Koren, who has returned to Slovenia following the birth of his new child.

New arrival Reuben Reid, who signed only last night, was not involved but watched his new team from the stands.

The opening 15 minutes were uneventful, although there was plenty of activity in the stands, with fans at the front of the East Stand taking evasive action from a heavy downpour.

There was lots of slick passing during the opening exchanges but little in the way of chances of any note.

In fact, it wasn't until the 20th minute that either team recorded an effort at goal.

Skipper Greening powered down the left and his centre wreaked havoc in the Chievo box.

The ball broke to Graham Dorrans 18 yards out whose wayward shot flew to Brunt on the edge of the box, but the Northern Ireland international could only fire over the bar.

The tourists responded on 24 when Michele Marcolini was just off target with a 25-yard free-kick.

Albion were next to threaten, with Olsson a whisker away from getting on the end of Greening's hanging free-kick into the Chievo box.

Moments later, Youssouf Mulumbu, who was enjoying an excellent game in the engine room, won possession and sent Brunt racing into the Chievo half.

The former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder strode forward before unleashing a ferocious 25-yard drive which flew straight at Stefano Sorrentino, who had his hands well and truly stung as he pushed the ball to safety.

Albion were on top now but Sorrentino was equal to another Brunt effort which sailed in his direction, this time from a 20-yard free-kick on the right-hand edge of the box.

Chievo were now struggling to get out of their own half and Dorrans almost registered a ridiculously early contender for goal of the season on 40.

The Scotland Under-21 international cheekily nut-megged Luciano wide on the left before charging into the box and curling agonisingly wide of the far post.

The final action of the half, which the Baggies had gone on to boss, saw Brunt's 25-yard free-kick clip the Chievo wall and fly just wide.

Albion were unchanged for the second period, which they started brightly.

Good inter-play between Simon Cox and Moore set up a shooting chance for Brunt, who fired just over from 20 yards.

Albion produced the best move of the game in the 53rd minute, which should have yielded the opening goal.

Dorrans found Greening with a lofted ball down the left and the former Middlesbrough man's delicious centre was volleyed wide by Moore from just inside the six-yard box.

In his defence, the former Villa striker had to stretch to make contact with the ball, but he will have been disappointed not to have at least hit the target.

Albion were again dictating the play and both Dorrans and Moore came within inches of converting Cox's cross-cum-shot.

It wasn't until the 55th minute that Chievo troubled the Albion defence again - and they too should have been celebrating a goal.

Striker Erjon Bogdani could only fire wide of the near post from close range after pouncing on Luciano's low centre.

After a lull in the action, Chievo threatened again on 72 when Scott Carson was forced into his first save of the game, diving to his right to palm away sub Simone Bentivoglio's 20-yard strike.

Albion suddenly burst into life as the game entered the final ten minutes.

Sorrentino had to pull off a smart near-post save to keep out sub Teixeira's 15-yard strike from Moore's lay-off.

From Greening's ensuing corner, the Chievo keeper was again called into action, this time showing safe hands to hold onto sub Chris Wood's downward header.

Moments later, Moore flashed a header wide from Greening's pinpoint right-wing centre.
