Kidderminster 2 Albion XI 2

Posted on: Mon 27 Jul 2009

LATEEF Elford-Alliyu's late leveller earned a youthful Albion side a creditable draw in a classic boys-against-men pre-season clash.

New Academy coach Keith Downing took charge of a predominantly teenaged Baggies squad at Aggborough who took the lead on 27 when Josh Knight won and converted a penalty.

The advantage lasted just seven minutes after Matthew Barnes-Homer headed home former Hawthorns youth player Brian Smikle's centre.

Kyle Hadley fired Mark Yates' side ahead just before the hour mark after Kidderminster broke swiftly from an Albion corner.

After Knight had thumped the bar from 25 yards on 76, Elford-Alliyu had the final say seven minutes from time with a cool finish into the bottom corner following good work by Joss Labadie.

And Baggies sub Sam Mantom could even have won it two minutes later after being put through one-on-one

First-team coach Michael Appleton watched the action unfold from the stands and was impressed with the way the club's young charges stood up to their Blue Square Premier counterparts.

"We rode our luck at times but we had three or four boys out there who have never played opponents anywhere near that level in terms of athleticism and physicality," said Appleton.

"To their immense credit, the lads really stuck at it.

"They got better the longer the game went on and got their rewards in the end.

"We didn't defend well enough for their first goal and missed a couple of challenges on the halfway line for their second.

"But the lads kept going and both Keith and I were absolutely delighted with them as it was boys against men in terms of physical attributes.

"It was a good workout and some of them may get another one tomorrow morning as we have an Under-18s game against Luton!"
