Di Matteo's desire impresses Peace
JEREMY Peace says Roberto Di Matteo's hunger for success won the day in the race to become Albion's new head coach.
The Baggies chairman is in no doubt the 39-year-old Italian is the right man for the job and believes he will work well with Sporting and Technical Director Dan Ashworth.
"We liked the desire and hunger for success he showed and style of play that he set out to play at MK Dons last season," said Peace.
"When you talk to him he is very impressive and he has very good connections in the game.
"People might question whether he has enough experience but as a player he has played under top coaches with Italy, Lazio and Chelsea.
"I'm sure that will stand him in very good stead.
"I think if you're good enough, you're old enough in my book.
"I ran my first public company when I was 27.
"Age is not a problem.
"We've got a structure in place at the club that he knows all about from his time in Switzerland and Italy, and he understands it.
"I think it's the way this club has to go to be successful.
"I'm 100 per cent convinced this structure will ultimately lead to this club being successful in staying in the Premier League, rather than yo-yoing."
Ashworth, who has been in his current position at the club for the last 18 months, added: "It was crucial to us that we had someone who could fit into our DNA, culture and philosophy.
"Roberto fitted the criteria because of his background as a player and the clubs he's played for.
"Also because of the way he had his MK Dons side set up in a division that's not really known for open, attacking football.
"The reaction of our supporters at the end of last season made the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.
"I think it was a fantastic vote of confidence for the way the club want to play.
"That was very strong in the back of our minds when we were making the decision."
