ADE Mafe today took over as Roberto Di Matteo's Hawthorns head of sports science.

He replaces Dan Harris, who has left Albion by mutual consent.

Mafe is a former Olympic sprinter, who has spent the last 13 years working in football.

Ruud Gullit appointed him as Chelsea's fitness coach in 1996 and he remained an integral part of the Blues' coaching staff until 2006, also working with Gianluca Vialli, Claudio Ranieri and Jose Mourinho.

Di Matteo worked with Mafe at Stamford Bridge and secured his services at MK Dons last July.

Prior to his move to The Dons, he also utilised his fitness and conditioning expertise in an 18-month spell at Millwall.

Born in Isleworth on November 12, 1966, Mafe still holds the world indoor record, along with team-mates Linford Christie, Darren Braithwaite and John Regis, for the 4x200metres relay - set in March 1991.

He became the youngest-ever Olympics 200m finalist, aged 18, at the 1984 Los Angeles games and also won medals at the Commonwealth Games, World and European Indoor Championships.
