Meite on course for World Cup

Posted on: Thu 25 Jun 2009

ABDOULAYE Meite remains on course for the 2010 World Cup after helping Ivory Coast beat Burkina Faso 3-2 in their latest qualifier at the weekend.

The Baggies defender, who finished the Barclays Premier League season with a back problem, played 90 minutes of the third-stage clash in Ouagadougou as his side came back from 2-1 down to win.

Ivory Coast are now three points clear of Burkina Faso at the top of African Group E, with three games remaining to hang onto their ticket for a place at next summer's finals in South Africa.

Chris Wood was an unused substitute as New Zealand rounded off their Confederations Cup campaign with a goalless draw against Iraq at Johannesburg's Ellis Park Stadium.
