England heartbreak for Lateef

Posted on: Wed 13 May 2009

LATEEF Elford-Alliyu played 90 minutes as England Under-17s suffered World Cup qualifying heartbreak in their 1-0 European Championships defeat by Turkey in Gotha, Germany.

Furkan Seker's 74th-minute winner not only ended any hopes of England reaching the Euro semi-finals but saw the Turks leapfrog them into third spot in Group B and snatch the final World Cup spot.

John Peacock's side started the day needing Germany to beat Holland and seal a comfortable victory over Turkey to book a place in the final four.

And they attacked from the first whistle, with Elford-Alliyu's left-wing cross almost creeping in before Deniz Mehmet tipped the ball to safety.

The Germans did their part by beating Holland 2-0 but an injury-hit Young Lions side drew a blank.
