Chelsea Res 2 Albion Res 2

Posted on: Tue 21 Apr 2009

JUAN Carlos Menseguez fired his first two goals in Albion colours as the reserves twice came from behind to draw 2-2 at Chelsea.

The Blues boasted some impressive names in their starting XI, including two Champions League winners Ricardo Carvalho and Juliano Belletti, plus fellow first-team squad members Michael Mancienne and Franco Di Santo.

But it was the Baggies' senior pros who shone in the Barclays Premier Reserve League (South) stalemate at Brentford FC's Griffin Park.

And Youssoulf Mulumbu got a third successive 90 minutes under his belt for the second-string as he continues to build his fitness after a thigh injury.

The hosts took the lead through Belletti in the 13th minute but were pegged back by Menseguez' 34th-minute strike.

Chelsea took a one-goal advantage in at the break courtesy of Patrick van Aanholt's free-kick in the 40th minute.

But Albion grew into the game in the second half and 15 minutes from time Menseguez earned the visitors a deserved point.

And only a diving save by Nic Heimann denied Do-heon Kim a winner from a free-kick at the death.

Baggies coach Michael Appleton said: "It was a fantastic performance and result because they had a much more experienced side out.

"We probably showed them too much respect in the opening 15 minutes and didn't play with enough freedom.

"But after that we matched them for long spells and the longer the game went on we looked the more likely winners.

"The boys were a little bit down a half-time but showed much more belief in the second half.

"It was a thoroughly-deserved draw and, with more luck, we could have won.

"The senior pros that played showed a great attitude and work ethic - and that rubbed off on the younger players.

"Mulumbu's fitness looked much better, he retained the ball well and complemented Joss Labadie.

"Kim also looked back to some good form."
