Albion Res 1 Tottenham Res 2
RYAN Donk's first goal in Albion colours proved in vain as Tottenham pinched all the points in a scrappy Barclays Premier Reserve League (South) encounter.
A feisty first-half, packed with bookings for both sides, drew to a close with only the on-loan Dutch defender's 39th-minute volley separating the two teams.
Roman Bednar came close to doubling the Baggies' lead in first-half stoppage time as he got 61 minutes under his belt, after seeing his first action since a back injury as a 58th-minute substitute in Saturday's top-flight stalemate with Bolton.
The hosts could not hang onto their lead and Gilberto, who had earlier hit the post for Spurs, levelled with a thumping finish seven minutes after the break.
And France international Pascal Chimbonda claimed victory for the visitors thanks to a 94th-minute header.
The Baggies threatened first when Do-heon Kim swung in a corner which saw Bednar flick on and Michael Dawson clear before Donk could get a decisive touch in the six-yard area.
Two minutes later Ryan Allsop almost gifted Spurs an opener when he allowed a Jacques Maghoma cross to slip through his fingers - but fortunately the ball bounced just short of Danny Rose in the six-yard box.
Albion then sprung a counter-attack and Josh Knight did well to thread the ball through to Juan Carlos Menseguez.
The on-loan Argentine winger saw his low drive well saved by Ben Alnwick with his feet before Luke Moore fired the rebound over from a difficult angle.
Carl Hoefkens' clumsy challenge on Rose saw referee Dean Mohareb award a free-kick in the 14th minute and Gilberto stepped up to curl a superb 25-yard free-kick past the despairing dive of Allsop and off the right-hand post.
Filipe Teixeira latched onto a loose clearance from Menseguez's corner in the 19th minute - but screwed his volley just wide of the right-hand upright.
The tackles were flying in and the game threatened to boil over in the 23rd minute when Bednar and Ricardo Rocha faced up to each other.
Five minutes later Bednar tangled with Alan Hutton after a 50/50 challenge and this time referee Mohareb dished out a yellow card apiece.
Seven minutes before the break Menseguez played Bednar in on goal and the Czech Republic hitman powered forward before forcing a fine left-handed save from Alnwick.
From the resultant Kim corner the ball was cleared, only for Teixeira to return it into the box with a cross-cum-shot that Donk diverted over the head of Alnwick and into the net with a right-foot volley.
The hosts came close to doubling their lead in the second minute of first-half stoppage time - but Alnwick managed to grab Bednar's powerful 20-yard drive at the second attempt.
Spurs made a change at the break with Ryan Mason coming on for Jean Parrett, who was injured at the end of the first period.
Menseguez started the second-half brightly and set off on a mazy run in the 49th minute - but could not beat Alnwick with his strike from the edge of the box.
And it was the visitors who found the back of the net three minutes later when Paul-Jose M'Poku broke down the right and cut the ball back for Gilberto to race onto it and drill home from just inside the area.
The North London outfit should have taken the lead in the 55th minute when M'Poku planted a cross right on substitute Mason's head, only for him to divert it wide of the right-hand post with the goal at his mercy.
Michael Appleton made a double substitution in the 61st minute as Menseguez and Bednar made way for youngsters Chris Wood and Romaine Sawyers respectively.
Allsop then needed to be alert three minutes later to swoop low to his right and snap up Rose's dipping long-range effort.
Appleton made his third and final change in the 67th minute as Sam Mantom replaced the lively Teixeira.
Tottenham made a further substitution four minutes later when Scotland international Hutton exited proceedings to be replaced by Adam Smith.
The Baggies missed a golden opportunity to pinch the points in stoppage time when a goalmouth scramble saw Wood's shot blocked, Moore's follow-up strike saved by Alnwick and Sawyers' effort blazed over.
But it was the visitors who stole victory in the fourth minute of added time when Chimbonda powered in on Mason's corner to head home from ten yards.
