Pele's double disappointment

Posted on: Thu 05 Feb 2009

PELE admitted it was a huge disappointment to be knocked out of the FA Cup 3-1 by Burnley in Albion's fourth-round replay - on the night he was handed the captain's armband for the first time.

The Cape Verde international was hoping to guide a Baggies team containing six changes to the one that drew 2-2 at Hull on Saturday past Owen Coyle's Championship outfit.

But missed chances by the visitors and some clinical finishing by the Clarets saw Albion fail to reach the fifth round for the first time in three years.

"I think it was a difficult game," said Pele.

"They are a good team but I think we gave them a good game.

"We had two or three chances to score but it wasn't enough and they took the chances they had.

"It's very disappointing for us to be knocked out because we were confident of a good cup run.

"It was disappointing to lose given how we did last season and also, with all due respect, to a team from the Championship.

"We had a good run last season and wanted to do as well this season but we came up against a confident side, who have done well this season in the cups.

"We didn't do our job well enough in the first game so it was always going to be a tough game for us in the replay."

The former Southampton defender was named skipper in the absence of the injured Jonathan Greening (knee) and Paul Robinson and Robert Koren being on the bench.

And he admitted it was a great honour to lead Tony Mowbray's men out at Turf Moor.

"I didn't really think about it to be honest," Pele added.

"Of the lads around the dressing room I guess I was one of the more senior players.

"I was asked to do it.

"The manager asked me and you've got to accept requests like that.

"It was a big honour for me.

"It wasn't something I asked for or was looking to do, but all the same, I was happy the manager asked me."
