Boss: Gianni's getting back on track
TONY Mowbray believes Gianni Zuiverloon is getting back on track after a dip in form.
The Dutch Under-21 international made an adrenaline-fuelled start to his first season in English football as he looked to impress following his £3.2million Hawthorns switch.
But Mowbray feels a hectic summer of Olympics action in Beijing has caught up with him and, as with most foreign players new to the Barclays Premier League, the high tempo of games has taken its toll.
"I think foreign players are not used to the intensity of the Premier League," said the Baggies boss.
"Early on you get adrenaline and during the first few games Gianni was coping with the energy.
"He had been to the Olympics so he had an intense period and little time off.
"It's a physical and mental thing.
"There is a levelling off.
"You hope their talent comes back to the fore and they become accustomed to the demands of the Premier League week in, week out.
"I genuinely feel, and you can see it sometimes with those who have never played at this level before, they go from being happy and smiley to looking tired and jaded.
"You need to get them to the other side where they understand the demands, what the league is about and why we work so hard to make sure they're ready for the league.
"I think the signs are there.
"His performances are becoming more consistent again following a dip."
Mowbray also highlighted the progress fellow summer-signing Jonas Olsson is making after he shone in Saturday's impressive defensive display at Stoke.
The Albion chief added: "Olsson is coming to terms with the physical demands of the league.
"He stood up well to what he came up against and I hope we can push on in the second half of the season with these players."
