SUPER-SUB Lateef Elford-Alliyu's late leveller took Albion reserves' Birmingham Senior Cup third-round tie at Rushall Olympic into extra-time only for the visitors to lose 3-2.
Lee Lynch opened the scoring for a young Baggies side on the half-hour mark and non-league Northern Premier League outfit Olympic missed a penalty to keep the score at 1-0 at half-time.
Rushall hit back with two second-half goals and looked to be going through to the next round in normal time until Elford-Alliyu's 80th-minute equaliser just ten minutes after coming on.
However, the Hawthorns hitman's effort proved in vain as Albion wasted a hat-trick of one-on-one chances before Olympic fired an early extra-time winner.
It is the second successive season Rushall have knocked the Baggies out of the competition, following last term's 1-0 second-round reverse at Dales Lane.
Albion second-string coach Michael Appleton said: "We played some fantastic stuff in the first half and we should have scored more than one goal.
"However, in the second half we were naive and stopped competing.
"Rushall got the ball forward earlier and continually won flick-ons.
"It was kids versus men and we need to be more streetwise because we were found wanting when it came to dealing with the physical side of things.
"Games like this will be a good education for the boys."
