A CHRIS Wood double was sandwiched by Tom Waghorn and Kayleden Brown goals as Albion reserves beat Highgate United 4-1 in the Birmingham Senior Cup second round.

Waghorn opened the scoring on the half-hour mark against the Midland Alliance outfit before Wood notched in the 40th minute to make it 2-0 to the visitors at the break.

Wood struck again ten minutes into the second half and Brown added a fourth in the 65th minute.

The hosts grabbed a late consolation two minutes from time as the Baggies cruised through to the next round.

Albion coach Michael Appleton said: "It was a game where we knew what was coming.

"They played a percentage game where they got the ball in behind us and up to their frontman.

"We matched them physically and matched their work rate.

"We did well to get the ball up to our front man a bit quicker than usual so we could play football further up the pitch.

"We also kept our discipline really well because there were a few tackles flying in.

"I told the boys at half-time that if we concentrated and remained disciplined the game was there to be won and they did it.

"It was a good exercise and gave some of the lads who have not played much a chance."

ALBION: Allsop, Malcolm, Waghorn, Lovell, Downing, Hancox, Knight (Saied 60), Mantom (Samuels 60), Brown, Wood, Lake-Gaskin (Sawyers 75). Subs not used: Pike, Clarke.
