Wood opener in vain for Under-18s

Posted on: Tue 02 Sep 2008

CHRIS Wood fired Albion Under-18s into a 20th-minute lead against Sunderland but the Black Cats struck back with goals in either half to win Saturday's FA Premier Academy League inter-group clash 2-1.

Academy coach Roger Wilkinson said: "It was a good build up for our goal.

"We played some very good football but we need to do it for the full 90 minutes.

"We had a couple of lapses of concentration and paid the price for that.

"We applied a lot of pressure late on but we didn't finish as well as we could and should do.

"Sunderland were very good in what was a high-tempo game but we played as well as them."

ALBION (4-3-3): Lewis; Gale, Downing, Clarke, Saeid; Lake-Gaskin, Lovell (Knight 75), Samuels (Lynch 70); Woods, Sawyers (Thorne 65), Brown. Subs not used: Malcolm, Waghorn.
