Hereford 1 Albion 2

Posted on: Mon 04 Aug 2008

CRAIG Beattie bagged a second-half brace as a youthful Albion side came from behind to beat the League One new boys.

Gerry Ani put the Bulls ahead with a 51st-minute header but the lead lasted just 13 minutes when Scotland international Beattie stabbed the Baggies level.

And the ex-Celtic man took his pre-season tally to three goals by bagging Albion's winner in the 75th minute.

First team coach Peter Grant, who took charge of the team at Edgar Street, said: "It's always good for the strikers to get goals and I was pleased with our night's work.

"We had a lot of young players out there - particularly across the middle of the park - and the lads showed a little bit of character after going one down.

"Hereford are a week ahead of us in their preparations while our team were probably playing together for the first time.

"But it ended up being quite comfortable and we could have won by more.

"It was good for the older boys to play 90 minutes and there were plenty of encouraging signs from the younger players.

"Graham Dorrans gets better and better each game and David Worrall did very well.

"We even brought on Adil Nabi, an Under-15 Academy player, for the last ten minutes and he showed one or two nice touches."

Beattie almost broke the deadlock after just three minutes when he struck a post from the edge of the box.

But it took a fine point-blank save from on-loan Michal Danek three minutes later to deny Hereford striker Steve Guinan and keep the visitors level at the break.

Ani headed Graham Turner's side ahead from Guinan's cross six minutes after the break.

But Albion drew level when young forward Lateef Elford-Alliyu skipped down the left and centred for Beattie to smash home from close range.

Bulls keeper Craig Samson then made a fine point-blank save to deny Bartosz Slusarski after Garry Breen failed to clear a David Worrall cross.

But it proved a momentary reprieve.

Beattie pulled off his marker to plant a terrific header into the top corner from Jared Hodgkiss' cross 15 minutes from time.
