DO-HEON Kim and James Morrison's late blockbusters saved Albion as they kicked off their pre-season programme on English soil.
A lacklustre first-half saw neither keeper forced to make a save, with Neil Clement's 32nd-minute free-kick strike off the right-hand post the only real highlight.
The game burst into life four minutes into the second half when Grant Holt opened the scoring.
The Town striker then doubled the Shrews' lead and his tally for the night in the 65th minute before Kim's 74th-minute cracker and Morrison's 83rd-minute exocet spoiled the League Two side's party.
Albion looked comfortable in possession at the Prostar Stadium and had the first clear sight of goal in the sixth minute when Graham Dorrans threaded Luke Moore through.
But the £3million hitman screwed his shot from the right-hand side of the penalty box wide of the near post.
Four minutes later it was Moore who drove forward again only to miscue his 20-yard strike well wide of the right-hand upright.
Town created the best effort so far in the 15th minute when full-back Ben Herd broke down the right and crossed for David Hunt, whose glancing ten-yard header flew wide of the left-hand post.
The ball broke kindly for Shrews striker Richard Walker in the 27th minute and he quickly squared it to Ben Davies who spun sharply on the edge of the box before firing just over.
Kim was brought down 25 yards from goal in the 32nd minute and Clement stepped up to thunder a curling free-kick off the right-hand post, with keeper Glyn Garner well beaten.
A sweeping move from back to front a minute before the break resulted in Paul Robinson whipping in a left-wing cross which Roman Bednar directed wide of the far post after climbing above the hosts' defence.
Paul Simpson's side broke the deadlock four minutes into the second half when Walker pounced on a loose ball in the penalty area and crossed to the back post.
Holt stretched to direct it goalwards and an awkward bounce took it past Dean Kiely and just over the line.
Two minutes later, play switched to the other end and Moore tried to head Clement's long diagonal ball into the path of Morrison.
Town keeper Garner won the race to the ball but fumbled and needed Shane Sheriff to clear off the goalline.
Walker and Holt combined again in the 55th minute to put the latter clean through on goal.
But the Shrews striker placed his effort too close to Kiely, who smothered the ball low down to his left.
A minute later, Dorrans found himself in space on the edge of the hosts' area and he wasted little time in firing a low drive just wide of the left-hand post.
On the hour mark, Matt Jackson's weak clearance cannoned off Sheriff into the air and Moore tried his luck with a spectacular overhead kick that flew over.
Moments later, the Baggies came close to levelling again as Pele powered in on Dorrans' right-wing corner and saw his header saved by Garner on the goalline before the ball was cleared by David Hunt.
But things went from bad to worse for the visitors in the 65th minute when Davies raced free down the right and swung in a pinpoint centre for Holt to fire through Kiely's legs from eight yards.
Tony Mowbray made four changes in the 70th minute, with Michal Danek and young trio Lateef Elford-Alliyu, Sebastien Lake-Gaskin and Mo Saied replacing Kiely, Bednar, Dorrans and Sherjill MacDonald respectively.
Kim gave Albion a lifeline in the 74th minute when he unleashed a 25-yard thunderbolt which found the top left-hand corner of the net before Garner had time to react.
The Baggies then levelled the scores in the 83rd minute when Morrison pounced on a loose ball 20 yards out to rocket home off the right-hand post.
At the opposite end, Davies played Michael Symes clean through on goal two minutes from time but the Shrews substitute panicked and fluffed his 20-yard shot well wide, ensuring the game finished level.
