Downing provides latest injury news from The Hawthorns

ALBION have been buoyed by the return of Shane Long to the training pitch ahead of their New Year’s Day clash with Newcastle (ko 3pm).

The Republic of Ireland striker has missed the last two games due to a calf strain but is expected to be fit to face the Magpies.

Keith Downing also revealed skipper Chris Brunt is hopeful of getting back on the practice pitch tomorrow after missing today’s session due to a stiff back.

Meanwhile Victor Anichebe remains a doubt after being sidelined for the last three games due to a groin problem.

“Shane’s back in training and, all being well, if he trains tomorrow he’ll be considered,” said Downing.

“Everybody trained today barring two players – Victor Anichebe and Chris Brunt, who has a stiff back and is hoping to train tomorrow.”
